Handy Scarf:

If you work somewhere that's a little cold, a pocket scarf is a great winter accessory. Like a regular scarf, it will keep you warm as you go about your day, but when you're up and about, chatting with coworkers or at meetings, you can use the pockets to keep your hands warm.

The little pockets are also a great place to stash a travel size tissue case, your lip balm or anything else you need to keep close at hand in the winter months.

Materials:

  • Three skeins of Knit Picks Twirl (I used color Fog), or about 200 yards of a similar bulky weight nubby yarn
  • one pair size 11 US needles
  • scissors
  • tape measure or ruler
  • yarn needle

Gauge

10 stitches and 17 rows per 4 inches (2.5 stitches and 4.25 rows per inch) in garter stitch. Gauge is not critical.

Size

Finished size is 6 inches wide and 60 inches long with 10-inch pockets.

Instructions:

  1. Cast on 15 stitches.
  2. Knit in Garter Stitch for 80 inches.
  3. Bind off.
  4. Cut yarn and weave in ends, or use them to help sew pockets.
  5. Fold the last 10 inches of each end of the scarf over on itself and sew down using working yarn, or a smoother yarn if that's easier for you.

Make it Your Own:

This project is designed so that the scarf can be worn straight around the neck and the pockets are in the right place to be useful when standing up.

To make this scarf fit you, put a tape measure around your neck as you would wear a scarf, measure where the tips of your fingers fall and add 10 inches to each side.

The yarn used in the pictured project is an alpaca, wool, nylon blend, which makes it very warm and a little shiny, but you can use any highly textured yarn you like.
