If you need to knit a hat for a baby or youngster in a short amount of time, this Purl Ridge Baby Hat is a great choice. It's only a little more complicated than plain Stockinette, so you can knit it up in no time.

The sample hat is knit proof of that: I worked it up in an evening (in the smallest size, but still, the bigger ones would not take that much longer).

I love the look of colorful Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Tonal in the sample, but feel free to use whatever medium weight yarn, solid or colorful, that you have in the house. Or add in stripes and make it a true stash-busting project.

This hat would be a great choice for a charity knitting project as well because it's quick, easy and cute and can be made for a girl or a boy.

Materials:

  • one hank Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Tonal (I used Blue Yonder Tonal), or about 55 (60, 65, 70, 76) yards medium weight yarn of your choice
  • set of 4 or 5 size 6 US (4 mm) knitting needles
  • tape measure, scissors and yarn needle

Gauge:

4.5 stitches and 5 rounds per inch in Stockinette Stitch in the round (knit every round).

Size:

About 12 (13, 14, 15, 16) inches around and 7 (7, 7.5, 7.5, 8) inches tall. To fit a small newborn (standard newborn, 3-6 month-old, 6-12 month-old, 1-2 year-old). Instructions are given for smallest size with larger sizes in parentheses.

Note: the smallest size is meant to fit a baby weighing around 6 pounds; it is not a true preemie hat but for a smaller-than-average head.

Knitting the Hat:

  1. Cast on 56 (60, 64, 68, 72) stitches. Divide onto 3 or 4 needles -- whatever your preference is -- and join in round.
  2. Work in knit 2, purl 2 ribbing for 1 inch, all sizes.
  3. Knit four rounds, then purl 1 round. Repeat these 5 rounds for about 3 (3, 3.5, 3.5, 4) inches. End with a purl round.
  4. Knit 1 round.
  5. *Knit 6, knit 2 together. Repeat from * around. Regular newborn and 6-12 month sizes, end K4. 49 (53, 56, 59, 63) stitches.
  6. Knit 1 round.
  7. *Knit 5, k2tog. Repeat from * around. Regular newborn and 6-12 month sizes, end K4. 42 (45, 48, 52, 54) stitches.
  8. Purl 1 round to continue purl ridge pattern.
  9. *Knit 4, k2tog. Repeat from * around. Regular newborn and 6-12 month sizes, end K4. 35 (40, 40, 45, 45) stitches.
  10. Knit 1 round.
  11. *Knit 3, k2tog. Repeat from * around. 28 (32, 32, 36, 36) stitches.
  12. Knit 1 round.
  13. *Purl 2, p2tog. Repeat from * around. 21 (24, 24, 27, 27) stitches.
  14. Knit 1 round.
