The Lacy Baby Hat is worked in the round in an easy combination of Stockinette Stitch and faggoting lace to make an open, airy pattern that still has some structure.

As designed, the hat is rather slouchy -- if you'd like a leaner look, try cutting out an inch or so of stitches, but remember that you need a multiple of 4 for the ribbing to work.

Materials:

  • one skein Lion Brand LB Collection Cotton Bamboo, or about 62 (76, 85, 98) yards light worsted weight yarn of your choice
  • set of four size 6 US (4 mm) double-pointed knitting needles
  • tape measure, scissors, yarn needle

Gauge:

20 stitches per 4 inches (5 stitches per inch) in Stockinette Stitch in the round.

Size:

To fit a newborn (3-6 month old, 6-12 month old, 1 to 3 year old). Actual hat measurements about 12 (14, 16, 18) inches around and 5 (6, 6.5, 7) inches long. Instructions are given for smallest size first with larger sizes in parentheses.

Knit the Hat:

  1. Cast on 60 (72, 80, 92) stitches. Distribute stitches onto three needles and join in round, placing a stitch marker if desired to mark the end of the round.
  2. Work in knit 2, purl 2 ribbing for 1 inch.
  3. Work 4 rounds in Stockinette Stitch (knit every round).
  4. Work 4 rounds in lace pattern 1: *yarn over, knit 2 together. Repeat from * around.
  5. Work 4 rounds in Stockinette Stitch.
  6. Work 4 rounds in lace pattern 2: *knit 2 together, yarn over. Repeat from * around.
  7. Continue in this manner, alternating between Stockinette Stitch and the lace patterns, and alternating the lace patterns, until piece measures about 3.5 (4.5, 5, 5.5) inches tall. From this point on, work in Stockinette Stitch only.
  8. If you ended your work with the lace pattern, knit one round plain. For 3-6 month and 1-3 year sizes, decrease 2 stitches during this round (I did mine at the end of the each of the first two needles). Shaping the crown is the same for all sizes.
  9. *Knit 8, k2tog. Repeat from * around. 54 (63, 72, 81) stitches.
  10. Knit 1 round.
  11. *Knit 7, k2tog. Repeat from * around. 48 (56, 64, 72) stitches.
  12. Knit 1 round.
  13. *Knit 6, k2tog. Repeat from * around. 42 (49, 56, 63) stitches.
  14. Knit 1 round.
  15. *Knit 5, k2tog. Repeat from * around. 36 (42, 48, 54) stitches.
  16. *Knit 4, k2tog. Repeat from * around. 30 (35, 40, 45) stitches.
  17. *Knit 3, k2tog. Repeat from * around. 24 (28, 32, 36) stitches.
  18. *Knit 2, k2tog. Repeat from * around. 18 (21, 24, 27) stitches.
  19. *Knit 1, k2tog. Repeat from * around. 12 (15, 18, 18) stithces.
  20. k2tog around. 6 (8, 10, 9) stitches.
  21. Cut yarn and thread onto a yarn needle. Slide remaining stitches off needles onto yarn and pull tight to close top of hat. Weave in ends.
