Half-Row of Top Triangles - First Triangle:

  1. See Sarah White's tutorial on working the top triangles for reference.
  2. On the wrong side, pick up and purl 6 stitches along the selvedge edge lying between your two needles, working from the bottom to the top of the rectangle below. Turn work.
    • Row 1 (right side): K5, SSK, turn.
    • Row 2: P4, P2tog, turn.
    • Row 3: K4, SSK, turn.
    • Row 4: P3, P2tog, turn.
    • Row 5: K3, SSK, turn.
    • Row 6: P2, P2tog, turn.
    • Row 7: K2, SSK, turn.
    • Row 8: P1, P2tog, turn.
    • Row 9: K1, SSK, turn.
    • Row 10: P2tog, turn.
    • Row 11: SSK, do not turn.

Second, Third and Fourth Top Triangles:

On the right side, slip remaining stitch onto right needle and pick up and knit 5 stitches along the selvedge edge lying between your two needles, turn.

  • Row 1 (wrong side): P6, turn.
  • Row 2: K5, SSK, turn.
  • Row 3: P4, P2tog, turn.
  • Row 4: K4, SSK, turn.
  • Row 5: P3, P2tog, turn.
  • Row 6: K3, SSK, turn.
  • Row 7: P2, P2tog, turn.
  • Row 8: K2, SSK, turn.
  • Row 9: P1, P2tog, turn.
  • Row 10: K1, SSK, turn.
  • Row 11: P2tog, turn.
  • Row 12: SSK. Do not turn.

Repeat all steps until four top triangles have been formed (half the width of the piece). Do not turn.

Knit the Flap:

  1. Work remaining four knit rectangles as given for the second row of triangles, picking up 5 stitches in the next rectangle, and 6 for the next three.
  2. At the end of the row, turn and bind off 6 stitches (entire rectangle) in main color.
  3. Begin to work flat entrelac, break main color and join contrasting yarn.
  4. Work purl rectangles as follows:
    • On the wrong side, pick up and purl 6 stitches along the selvedge edge of bound off rectangle, working from the top to the bottom. Turn work.
    • Row 1 (right side): K5, slip 1 purlwise, turn.
    • Row 2: P5, p2tog, turn.
    • Rows 3-12: Repeat Rows 1 and 2 five times, but do not turn work after Row 12. All stitches from previous block have been decreased and incorporated into new block.
  5. Work the rectangles for the rest of this row in the same way.
  6. Turn work and bind off 6 stitches (entire rectangle) in contrasting color.
  7. Break yarn and join main color.
  8. Work two top triangles to finish the flap as follows:
    • On the right side, pick up and knit 6 stitches along the selvedge edge of bound off rectangle, turn.
    • Row 1 (wrong side): P6, turn.
    • Row 2: K5, SSK, turn.
    • Row 3: P4, P2tog, turn.
    • Row 4: K4, SSK, turn.
    • Row 5: P3, P2tog, turn.
    • Row 6: K3, SSK, turn.
    • Row 7: P2, P2tog, turn.
    • Row 8: K2, SSK, turn.
    • Row 9: P1, P2tog, turn.
    • Row 10: K1, SSK, turn.
    • Row 11: P2tog, turn.
    • Row 12: SSK. Do not turn.
    • Repeat Step 8 once more until all stitches have been decreased. Fasten off.
