Preemie Blankie

One of the biggest challenges that most preemies face -- even my little one, who didn't really have any health problems from being born six weeks early -- is the problem of regulating body temperature. Most little ones born early face at least a little time in an isolet while they learn to keep themselves warm, and blankets are a big help when they come out to help keep them cozy.

I've worked up a really easy but also quite useful Preemie Blanket knit in Horizontal Dash Stitch, a variation of Stockinette that throws in some horizontal lines of purling every now and then. This nicely breaks up the stripes in the self-striping yarn I used but doesn't take away from the overall impression of slowly changing colors.

The size, 30 by 30 inches, is what Preemie Guide Cheryl Morrissette told me would be most useful for NICUs, because it could be used both to cover the baby and on top of the isolet itself. And it's a great size for the knitter, too, because even when it's almost done it's small enough to fit in a knitting bag you take out of the house.
