Knitting in the News: Knits for the G-20, Knitting the Town Red and More
Sunday September 20, 2009
As leaders gather for the G-20 summit in Pittsburgh, some will see a knit welcome created by local crafters. A group from the Knit One yarn shop in Squirrel Hill worked up a banner that includes the names of the 19 member nations plus the European Union that are attending the conference, and it will hang throughout the week in the Allegheny County Airport, which some dignitaries are using as they travel to the meeting. The knitters say the banner represents the cultural and personal links between people.
Guerrilla knitters in Inverness, Scotland, have been decorating the town with knitting and crocheted objects to celebrate the regeneration of the city's old town. Knitters made decorations for the streets and even worked up cozies for some tombstones in the cemetery. The effort was part of a weeklong celebration including art and music designed to draw visitors downtown.
This week's charity knitting news includes a look at a group knitting prayer shawls in Alabama and the story of a North Carolina woman who knit 50 sets of preemie hats, booties and blankets to donate to Duke University Hospital while she was recuperating from her own surgery.
