How Many Unfinished Projects do You Have?

Wednesday May 28, 2008
Since I've been thinking and writing a lot this week about unfinished objects (and the amazing number of them I have) I thought I'd ask you how many unfinished projects you have.

In my case I'm counting unfinished as anything that's on the needles, or off the needles but still in an unfinished state so that it can't be used (but not counting weaving in ends, just actually finishing such as sewing seams).

When I first made my list of UFOs, I came up with 20. But I keep finding more that I'd forgotten about, which got the total closer to 25. So those numbers of 50 plus don't actually seem so amazing to me; before this is over I might find my true answer is closer to that. If only I could get some projects finished, I'd never have to buy needles again!

I can’t afford to buy new needles whenever I want to start a new project using a size that’s already in use, so anytime I want to use a given size again I first have to finish the project that’s already on those needles. That said, I’m a relatively new knitter and have not yet tackled anything more complex than socks, the thought of an entire sweater is intimidating, so that might have something to do with it as well.

I have only one technical UFO, a queen sized pieced blanket that I alternate with other projects. That’s been in the works for several years in multiple designs. I’m working on it a piece at a time alternating other projects with it. That seems to be making progress, but it’s still less than half done. Next time I want to tackle something this size, I might stick to crochet since it goes faster.

I can be smug and answer ‘none’ only because all frogging was finished last night. just wait a couple of weeks and ask again!

(4) Katie says:

I spent last year finishing up all my UFO’s and ended the year with only a few things still not done. It seems like I have spent most of this year starting projects and not finishing them. So my list right now is long but I know I can get it whipped down to size if I work at it.

Somehow I find it hard to believe that some have NO UFOs…Does that mean that they aren’t doing anything to finish? I tend to finish up UFOs in fits and starts. I also get extra sets of needles at Thrift shops.

I’m a compulsive personality. I don’t knit to relax, I knit to get it done! I finish 1 project at a time then move on.
