Knitting in the News: Hats, Dolls, Getaways and Indy

Tuesday May 27, 2008
Two notes this week on charity knitting. A New Zealand group has been working to outfit each of New River Primary School's 270 students with knit caps for the winter. The 230 members of the Knitknutz group and friends in the Precious Babies Southland group knit up the caps.

Meanwhile, two women in Owen Sound, Ontario have knit up 100 Izzy dolls, which will be shipped to war-torn regions along with medical supplies. Soldiers will then distribute them to children. The dolls are knit in honor of Master Corporal Mark Isfeld, who was killed by a landmine.

A big trend in travel right now is girlfriend getaways, vacations for women without their husbands or families. Often these trips revolve around spas, but why not try a knitting cruise or a yarn store crawl in an unfamiliar city?

Finally, the New York Times notes that things have changed a lot in the life of Karen Allen since the last Indiana Jones film was made. In the intervening years she's starred in other movies, moved to Massachusetts and opened a shop selling handmade cashmere clothing and other glamorous goodies. She's been a knitter since age 5 and she designs (and often knits) every piece in the collection.
