Proof You Really Can Knit Anything

Monday February 12, 2007
Last week a call went out from Liverpool Women's Hospital for a bunch of knitted breasts to be used to teach new mothers how to breastfeed.

The hospital had been using latex models to help women, but they are rather expensive, running about £35 each. The knitted versions can be made in different colors to match different skin tones.

Someone at the hospital brought in a pattern from the Lactation Consultants of Great Britain and infant feeding coordinator Kate McFadden asked her mother to knit some.

"I asked my Mum to give it a go and she said it was easy," McFadden said. "My mum and I are still knitting the breasts but hopefully with the response we will soon have sufficient breasts. We have been contacted by several people who are interested in supporting us at Liverpool Women's Hospital which is great."

The hospital's appeal has received worldwide attention, and the Lactation Consulatants of Great Britain has posted a PDF of the pattern to make the wooly helpers.

McFadden says they are accepting all donations with open arms, but for those who don't live in Europe and don't want to pay the expense of shipping overseas, this might be a great opportunity to give locally. Contact the maternity ward of your local hospital and see if they would be interested in a donation of knitted breasts. This could be a really fun project for a group and would really turn heads if you knit it in public!
