Valley Yarns, the label of yarn put out by the yarn store WEBS, produces a lot of beautiful yarns at a good value, and Valley Yarns Northampton is a great choice for knitting basics and beyond.
The yarn is soft, warm, woolly and unassuming, and it turns out beautiful knitting in one color or several, felted or unfelted.

I have used several different Valley Yarn products in my knitting career, and I have to say that Northampton is one of my favorites. But there's not a lot to say about this yarn, in a way. It's kind of a simple yarn in that it does what you want it to do without giving you any trouble.
Of course in reality that's a difficult thing to do. This wool yarn is smooth and soft, easy to work with and great to wear. It's a lovely felter and all the available colors mean you can do great colorwork with it as well.
This yarn is a great TV knitting yarn. You know the super easy project we often choose when we want to knit mindlessly, without paying a lot of attention to what's happening with our hands? Valley Yarns Northampton is the yarn version of that.
When knitting up my swatch I stopped looking at the needles almost immediately, and the swatch flew by with nary a split or a snag. The yarn is pretty tightly plied, making it durable and giving the knitting a somewhat firm feel, but the stiffness goes away after blocking.
Stockinette stitch has a slight curl in the yarn, most of which blocked out for me easily. Even with the dark color I reviewed, there was no bleeding in the wash water. The stitches came out incredibly even and straight. This is one well-behaved yarn!
Uses for Valley Yarns Northampton
Do you love to knit projects with medium weight wool? Then you should try this yarn. It would be a great choice for just about any wool knitting project you have in mind, from sweaters to felted accessories.
The wide range of colors makes this a great choice for color knitting as well, from simple stripes to intricate intarsia. It also shows texture well and is a great choice for cables and pattern stitches. In fact, I can't think of a woolly project that you wouldn't want to use this yarn for.
Valley Yarns Northampton, as of this writing, was selling for $4.99 a skein, which is a great price for nearly 250 yards of yarn. Small projects can be worked with a single skein, and even a sweater might take only five to 10 skeins, depending on the size.
Given how agreeable this yarn is to work with, I can easily see bringing this yarn into rotation as a go-to worsted wool that you'll want to use again and again.
