Knitting

When many knitters think of cotton yarn, their minds probably turn to rough, workhorse cottons like kitchen cotton, which certainly has its uses but isn't the most comfortable yarn to work with.

If that's your idea of what {link url=/od/yarn/a/cotton_tips.htm]knitting with cotton[/link] is like, you'll need to change your mind after just a few rows of knitting with Berroco Pure Pima. This long-staple Pima cotton yarn is softer than many other cotton yarns out there, and it produces a fine fabric with much more even stitches than you're likely to see with many cotton yarns as well.

The yarn is made of both mercerized cotton and regularly processed cotton plied together, which gives the yarn a lovely sheen that is subtly reflected as the light hits it.

Working with the yarn is easy, though I did have a bit of splitting and uneven stitching when working my swatch on aluminum needles (admittedly I did knit part of it in a really dark room). It knits pretty quickly for a light weight yarn, and the little Stockinette Stitch curl that was evident while knitting mostly completely goes away upon blocking.

Uses for Berroco Pure Pima

This soft, shiny yarn is great for all manner of projects you'd like to knit with cotton, from summery tops to little sweaters that can take you through to a cooler season.

The good variety of colors suggests happy striping opportunities, and while stitch patterns and texture would look nice in this yarn, working with it really makes me think of simple projects, wardrobe basics without a lot of fuss involved that you'll love to wear year after year.

There's certainly no reason it couldn't be used for accessories, home projects and baby things like other cotton yarns, but remember the slightly fussier than normal care instructions, particularly if you're planning to gift a project made with this yarn.

Bottom Line

Berroco Pure Pima will probably run you a little less than $6 a hank, meaning you could knit a baby garment for about $24 or a long T-shirt style shirt for around $60.

You'll enjoy your time knitting with this yarn, for sure, and the projects that you make from it will be lovely and feel lovely on your body. You'll feel a little fancy every day you wear projects made with this beautiful summery yarn.
