A Fine Classic:

The Vermont Organic Fiber Company offers three certified organic yarns under the brand name O-Wool: a cotton/wool blend and two 100 percent organic merino wools.

O-Wool Classic 2-Ply is is buttery wool that would be a great choice for any fine knitting project.

Specifications:

  • Content: 100 percent organic merino
  • Yarn weight: Fine
  • Gauge: Label says 26 to 30 stitches per 4 inches on size 2 or 3 US needles; I got 26 stitches per 4 inches on size 3 US needles
  • Yardage: about 198 yards in a 50 gram skein
  • Color Availability: 12 solid colors
  • Color Used in Swatch: Rust (4112)

Knitting:

Classic 2-Ply is a nice fine-gauge wool that's super soft and easy to work with. The plies stay together nicely and there's not a lot of splitting.

The stitch definition wasn't great on the swatch I knit up, leaving the appearance of the knit fabric a little rough before blocking. It did smooth out some after blocking, and virtually all of the curl of the stockinette fabric went away as well.

This is a nice yarn even for people who don't usually like to work with fine gauges because it's well-behaved and will reward you with a lovely drapey fabric.

Uses for O-Wool Classic 2-Ply:

Because of the nice drape of this yarn, it would be great for shawls and fine-knit tops like twinsets. It would also make a lovely (if time-consuming) scarf.

If you're a new mom who's willing to hand wash a baby blanket (or know someone who is), this yarn comes in several pastel colors that would make a lovely heirloom baby blanket or wrap that's pesticide free, a great way to start a new baby in the world.

Care of O-Wool Classic 2-Ply:

Like any wool yarn, O-Wool's Classic 2-Ply should be hand washed in cool water with as little agitation as possible, since it can felt. Get rid of excess water by rolling the garment in a towel and lie flat to dry.

Do not wring, twist or hang a wet wool garment. If you can follow these basic care rules you'll have a beautiful and environmentally responsible finished product to enjoy for years to come.

Bottom Line:

O-Wool Classic 2-Ply is a lovely yarn that knitters who like knitting at a small gauge will enjoy working with. The finished fabric has very little itch factor, making it a good choice for any fine-gauge knitting projects.
