Soy-tastic:

All kinds of foodstuffs are being turned into yarn these days, from corn to milk and even soybeans. Kollage's Delcious yarn uses soybeans to spin a that's light and stretchy.

The yarn is actually a tube, much like the company's Cornucopia yarn, so it behaves like ribbon yarn and has a nice, airy feel.

Specifications:

  • Content: 100 percent soybean
  • Yarn Weight: Medium/worsted
  • Gauge: Yarn label says 22 stitches per 4 inches on size 8 US needles; I got 18 stitches per 4 inches on size 8 needles after blocking
  • Yardage: 121 yards per 45 gram skein
  • Color Availability: 29 solids and 3 multis
  • Color Used in Swatch: Azalea

Knitting:

Because this yarn is actually a tube rather than a plied yarn, it works a lot like a ribbon yarn, meaning that it will twist a bit as you work with it. This may result in some less than perfect looking stitches, but adds a bit of character and texture to your work.

The yarn feels incredibly light as you're knitting it, but it is a little firmer in the swatch than in the ball. It has great drape and is really stretchy -- I could of blocked it to a bigger size quite easily.

The swatched fabric is incredibly curly when first knit up, but a quick block took it all away, leaving a nice, open fabric.

Uses for Kollage Delicious:

Kollage Delicious would be great for summer knitting, especially tank tops, light sweaters, shawls and wraps. I can see a fun beach cover knit from this yarn.

Because of the great range of colors, it would also be a good choice for projects on which you want to play with color, whether that's adding a stripe to a simple stockinette tee or designing your own colorwork motifs.

The finished fabric has a somewhat silky texture, a little like a wool/cotton blend, but lighter. The structure of the yarn should make it breathe well, making it a good choice for projects that will be on the skin.

Care of Kollage Delicious:

Projects made with Delicious should be washed by hand and laid flat to dry. The yarn should be able to take some agitation and wringing if needed, but don't abuse it.

Because the yarn is so stretchy, you may find you need to pull garments back into shape after washing, particularly if you're a little rough with them.

Bottom Line:

Kollage Delicious is fun to work with, comes in an array of cheerful colors and lets you tell people "I'm knitting soybeans!" This yarn would be a great choice for a summer fling and will give you exposure to a fiber you might not otherwise have worked with.
