Works over a variety of stitch widths. To determine the number of stitches you need, decide how big you want your squares to be. If you want four by four squares, cast on a number of stitches that divides evenly by four. In the example below, we're using multiples of three, so a number divisible by three is used. For best results, pick a number of stitches that will give you rows that start and end with knits. The sample is knitted with 15 stitches.
Row one: Knit three, purl three across.
Row two: Purl three, knit three across.
Row three: Knit three, purl three across.
Row four: Knit three, purl three across.
Row five: Purl three, knit three across.
Row six: Knit three, purl three across.
Repeat these six rows for pattern.
Another example of the woven stitch, using four stitch and four row blocks, is the 4X4 Red Woven Scarf.
