Boxy Beauty:

Chenille yarn already has a texture all its own, but I thought it would be fun to add a textured stitch to this velvet-like yarn to make a super-soft and warm scarf that's fun to knit.

The Box Stitch is a really easy four row repeat that's easy to memorize and to knit. This is great television knitting that's more interesting than plain old Garter or Stockinette.

Materials:

  • Four skeins MY Touch Me from Muench Yarns (mine is color 3622, a dark green) or about 150 yards of similar light to medium weight chenille yarn
  • one pair size 7 US knitting needles
  • scissors
  • yarn needle or crochet hook

Gauge

About 17 stitches and 20 rows per 4 inches (4 stitches and 5 rows per inch). Gauge is not critical.

Size

Finished size is 6 inches wide and 50 inches long.

Instructions:

  1. Cast on 26 stitches.
  2. Row 1: Knit 2, *purl 2, knit 2. Repeat from * across.
  3. Row 2: Purl 2, *knit 2, purl 2. Repeat from * across.
  4. Row 3: Repeat row 2.
  5. Row 4: Repeat row 1.
  6. Repeat these four rows until scarf measures 50 inches.
  7. Bind off in pattern.
  8. Cut yarn and weave in ends.

About the Yarn:

Chenille yarn is somewhat fuzzy and plush, making it ideal for projects that you're going to want to touch. Touch Me is a great choice because it is a combination of nylon microfiber and wool, giving it extra warmth and stretch.

Though the amount of wool in this yarn is very small, Muench Yarns advises against washing the yarn by machine, as it can felt. The company suggests dry cleaning any project made with this yarn.
