Best Knitting Books of 2007

Every year there are more knitting books, and every year there are books that stand out above the rest. This list represents some of my personal favorites of the books of 2007 that made their way to me. They are listed in alphabetical order by the author's name, so this list is not meant to convey a ranking.

Best Knitting Books of 2008

So many great knitting books came out in 2008 that it was difficult to pick just a dozen for this year-end retrospective, but here are the books I consider the best knitting books of 2008, listed alphabetically by the author's last name rather than ranked top to bottom.

Beyond Wool

Beyond Wool offers 25 patterns for tops, scarves and other projects knit with natural fibers, sometimes also including wool, such as angora, alpaca, cashmere and cotton, as well as providing tips for working with these fibers.

Books for Knitters

There are so many great knitting books out there, but it can be difficult to pick the best off the huge shelf of pattern and reference books out there. Whether you're looking to build you own knitting library or want some gift ideas for other knitters, this list should get you started by highlighting the best of the best.

Boutique Knits

Classic Knits at Home provides 15 lovely patterns for the home, with an emphasis on throws and pillows. The patterns are beautiful, some of them are quite easy and all of them are classics you'll love having in your home for years to come.

Classic Knits

Marianne Isager is known for straightforward designs that also add extra details to make them a bit more interesting, and such is the case with the projects in Classic Knits, a book full of timeless designs fancied up with colorwork, textured knitting and more.

Color Style

If you're a little afraid to knit with color because you think you'll end up with something ugly or a little too trendy, Color Style is the book for you. This book's classic designs use color in interesting ways and in projects you'll want to wear over and over.

Continuous Cables

Most knitters are familiar with the Aran-style knit cables, but Melissa Leapman takes cables to a whole different level with her book Continuous Cables.

Creating the Happiest of Holidays

If you're a knitter who likes other crafts as well, Creating the Happiest of Holidays is sure to give you some great ideas for gifts to craft, creative ways to present them and things to cook and bake for the holidays.

Domiknitrix

Jennifer Stafford believes that no knitter should be dominated by his or her knitting. Her book Domiknitrix aims to give knitters of all skill levels more confidence in their craft.

Elements of Style

It Itches

It's likely only knitting people will enjoy Franklin Habit's book of knitting cartoons and humorous essays, but that's OK. We don't want them to be able to understand us.

Kitty Knits

Knit Along with Debbie Macomber - Back on Blossom Street

For the past several of Debbie Macomber's Blossom Street books, Leisure Arts has produced booklets that go along with the story and items the characters are knitting. The Back on Blossom Street book includes prayer shawls and baby gear.

Knit Along with Debbie Macomber: A Charity Guide for Knitters

Many knitters enjoy working on projects that are donated to charity, but if you're looking for some new charities to help out or simply don't know where to start when knitting for charity, Debbie Macomber's Charity Guide for Knitters will give you a bunch of options.

Knit Green

Knitting Books for New Knitters

There are so many books on knitting published each year, it can be pretty overwhelming for new knitters to find the ones that will be most useful to them for where they are in the craft. This list includes some of my favorite knitting books for new knitters, providing inspiration, patterns and instruction. They're not in any particular order.

Knitting Classic Style

If you're interested in how fashion and knitting are able to influence each other, you will enjoy Veronik Avery's Knitting Classic Style. This book's 25 patterns are influenced by classic fashion pieces.

Knitting Color

Brandon Mably is an expert at combining colors and using the knitted fabric as an artist's canvas. His lovely book, Knitting Color, lets readers in on his travels and his inspirations.

Knitting in the Sun

If you live in a warm climate or somewhere it gets warm in the summer, you're sure to enjoy this book full of 32 different projects for warmer weather, ranging from tank tops to a knit seat and back for a beach chair.

Knitting in Tuscany

Nicky Epstein shares travel tips, the best in restaurants, accommodations and don't miss attractions for yarn aficionados who might find themselves traveling to Tuscany. For the rest of us there's plenty of eye candy and patterns inspired by the beautiful Italian region.

Knitting Little Luxuries

If you're looking for knitting projects that are feminine and fun, classic but modern and as individual as you are, you'll love Louisa Harding's Knitting Little Luxuries.

Knitting Never Felt Better

Nicky Epstein's Knitting Never Felt Better is a drop-dead gorgeous book that will give you ideas about how to use felt that you've probably never thought of before.

Knitting New Scarves

If you love knitting scarves but would like to try something way beyond the basic rectangle, Lynne Barr's Knitting New Scarves may be just the book to get you thinking about new ways to knit scarves.

Knitting Noro

Jane Ellison clearly loves Noro yarns, and she also loves sharing simple, easily altered patterns that show off the bold colors and great striping potential of this yarn, as she does in the book devoted to the subject.

Knitting on Top of the World

Knitting on Top of the World offers an overview of major knitting traditions from around the world and uses traditional motifs and knitting styles to create modern garments that look straight from the world of high fashion.

Knitting with Balls

Knitting is enjoyed by men just as it is a popular craft with women, but there aren't a lot of books out there full of patterns designed by men for men. This book provides a great service for men who knit, or women who knit for men.

Knitting with Gigi

Combining cute poetry with basic knitting instruction and simple patterns for kids, Knitting with Gigi is a good way to get kids interested in knitting, as well as knitting to help others.

Knockdown Knits

If you're a roller derby girl or just want to add a bit of an edge to your knitting projects, Knockdown Knits by Joan of Dark (Toni Carr) will show you how to bring a bit of the rough sport to your wardrobe.

Kristin Knits

Kristen Nicholas is one of the most colorful knitters out there, and her book, Kristin Knits gives readers a chance to play with color and learn their own color sensibilities.

Leisure Arts' iKnit Accessories

Leisure Arts has a new series of iCreate booklets that give crafters the low-down on one particular craft. The iKnit book focuses on knitted accessories and is a fun book with a few quick projects you might want to try.

Luxury Yarn One-Skein Wonders

Like other books in the same series, Luxury Yarn One Skein Wonders features 101 patterns using a range of luxury fibers, including cashmere, alpaca, silk and eco-friendlier choices like bamboo and organic fibers.
