A Toy for Kitty:

If you have a cat that loves to play, this easy to knit tube-shaped cat toy is a great addition to your collection. It's knit with just a tiny bit of yarn from the stash and uses an old pill bottle to give it structure.

Just add a couple of jingle bells or some beans to the bottle and you've got a fun toy your kitties are sure to enjoy.

Materials:

  • about 16 yards medium weight yarn of your choice
  • set of 4 size 7 US double-pointed knitting needles
  • small prescription pill bottle (mine is 5 inches around and 3 inches tall
  • piece of paperboard
  • tape
  • jingle bells or another noise maker
  • scissors and yarn needle

Gauge:

4 stitches and 5.5 rows per inch in Stockinette Stitch in the round. Gauge is not critical.

Size:

To fit a small prescription bottle, 3 inches tall and 5 inches around.

Instructions:

  1. Cast on 6 stitches. Divide evenly onto 3 needles and join in round, being careful not to twist.
  2. Knit 1 round.
  3. *Knit in the front and back. Repeat from * around, 12 stitches.
  4. Knit 3 rounds.
  5. *Knit 1, knit in the front and back. Repeat from * around, 18 stitches.
  6. Purl the next round.
  7. Knit every round until piece measures 3 inches from purl round.
  8. Purl the next round.
  9. *Knit 1, knit 2 together. Repeat from * around, 12 stitches.
  10. Knit 3 rounds.

Finishing the Toy:

  1. Take the lid off your pill bottle and insert a couple of jingle bells or another noise maker. Cover the top with a piece of paperboard and tape closed.
  2. Slip the bottle into the tube and continue knitting as follows.
  3. *Knit 2 together. Repeat from * around, 6 stitches.
  4. Knit 1 round.
  5. Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread onto needle and slip stitches off knitting needles onto yarn. Pull tight and thread yarn back down into the tube and back out again. Trim the yarn and slide the tail back into the tube.
