Smallest size only: In the section before the chart begins, you must decrease 2 stitches. I worked 1 round in color A, then decreased 2 stitches on the next round with knit 2 together decreases.
- Change to color A and knit 3 (3, 6, 9, 12) rounds.
- Knit 5 (7, 9, 11, 14), place marker, work snowflake chart starting at round 1, place marker, knit 10 (15, 19, 23, 29), place marker, work snowflake chart starting at round 1, place marker, knit 5 (8, 10, 12, 15). See note below for alternative design for larger sizes.
- Continue in Stockinette Stitch and working snowflake chart in sections as established. As you work the chart, make sure you catch the floats (twist the 2 colors together) every few stitches when you're just working one color for a long stretch. You will be able to see the darker color peeking out from behind a little bit, but I think this gives the hat a nice rustic look.
- When chart is complete, cut yarn B. Work 1 round in A: no increasing or decreasing for the 2 newborn sizes, decrease 2 for 3-6 month and 1-3 year sizes and increase 2 for 6-12 month size. 52 (60, 66, 78, 84) stitches.
To shape the hat for the smallest 2 sizes: *K8, k2tog. Repeat from * around. Knit the next round. *K7, k2tog. Repeat from * around. Knit the next round. *K6, k2tog. Repeat from * around. Knit the next round. *K5, k2tog. Repeat from * around. *K4, k2tog. Repeat from * around. End smallest size K1. *K3, k2tog. Repeat from * around. End smallest size K1. *K2, k2tog. Repeat from * around. End smallest size K1. *K1, k2tog. Repeat from * around. End smallest size K1.
To shape for larger sizes: *K4, k2tog. Repeat from * around. Knit the next 2 rounds. *K3, k2tog. Repeat from * around. Knit the next round. *K2, k2tog. Repeat from * around. Knit the next round. *K1, k2tog. Repeat from * around. Next 3 rounds, *K2tog. Repeat from * around.
Cut yarn, thread onto yarn needle. Slip remaining stitches onto yarn, pull tight and weave in ends.
Alternative Pattern for Larger Sizes:
Both the 6-12 month and 1-3 year size hats have enough stitches to repeat the snowflake motif 4 times instead of 2. For the 6-12 size, K4, place marker, work chart, pm, K4, pm, work chart, pm, K4, pm, work chart, pm, K4, pm, work chart.
For 1-3 year: K7, pm, work chart, pm, K7, pm, work chart, pm, K7, pm, work chart, pm, K7, pm, work chart.
