Now that you have picked up and knitted one stitch, just continue in the same manner until you have picked up all the stitches that you need. Then you can work with these stitches just like you would work with any cast-on stitches.

Picking up stitches can be a little awkward at first, but once you get the hang of it, it is really quite easy and a versatile knitting skill that you will use over and over.
