To make the cable, stitches must be twisted. This is accomplished by changing the order that the stitches are knitted in.

Slip the next three stitches onto a cable needle as if you were purling them. Bring the cable needle in front of the other two working needles. Then knit the next three stitches off your left-hand needle.
