Work as many rows of strands as your pattern suggest (again, it's usually five but you can vary it if you like). In this version of Butterfly Stitch, I'm working the strands together with a purl stitch on the wrong side of the fabric.

Some variations will work the strands on the right side; either way the technique is similar.

Begin by working to the stitch that is in the center of the strands and using the right hand needle to pick up the strands and place them on the left hand needle.
