Definition:

The heel flap is a square (or nearly square) flap of knitting that is worked back and forth rather than in the round. This piece of knitting covers your heel when you wear the sock.

Heel flaps need to be durable and are often worked in Heel Stitch to add durability.

In the picture at right, the heel flap is the part knit in dark blue.
