A carry along generally is a type of yarn that isn't designed to be knit by itself, though some carry alongs can be knit with successfully on their own. They are very thin yarns that add a bit of sparkle or pizazz to a plainer yarn without changing the gauge of the main yarn. They can also be characterized as novelty yarns and often involve eyelashes, sequins, bobbles or other embellishments.
To work with a carry along yarn, simply hold it in your hand along with the main yarn and follow the pattern working with both yarns as if they were one.
To see a carry along in action, check out the Fizzy, Fuzzy Scarf, which uses a carry along to jazz up what would otherwise be a plain wool scarf.
