Classy, Classic Knits:
Different knitting magazines appeal to different kinds of knitters, but if you're the sort of knitter who likes classic styles made with innovative techniques, you'll probably enjoy Interweave Knits.
The magazine, also sometimes referred to online simply as Knits or as IK, has been helping knitters explore their craft since 1997.
Interweave Knits History:
- Founded: 1997
- Founder: Linda Ligon (the founder of the publishing house Interweave, which publishes other craft magazines and books)
- Original editors: Marilyn Murphy and Judith Durant
- Other editors include: Melanie Falick, Pam Allen
- Current editor: Eunny Jang, who's been with the magazine since April 2007
About the Magazine:
IK publishes four issues a year, as well as an average of two special issues a year, dealing with topics such as felting and holiday crafts.
The magazine also publishes several special issues each year, usually devoted to weekend knits, gifts and accessories. These issues are not included in a subscription rate but can be ordered individually online or where Interweave magazines are normally sold.
Interweave Knits Departments and Features:
IK typically features around 20 patterns in each issue, ranging from sweaters to socks, hats, scares, wraps and other accessories, with an emphasis on patterns for women.
Regular departments in the magazine include News and Views and the Bookshelf. There is always an artist spotlight, a yarn review, Vicki Square's "The Thinking Knitter" column and a "Beyond the Basics" lesson.
Visit the magazine website for more details, pattern previews and to subscribe.
Sister Pubs and Other Projects:
In addition to Interweave Knits, Interweave Press also publishes KnitScene, edited by Lisa Shroyer, twice a year.
The company also runs Knitting Daily, an online community and daily newsletter on all things knitting and produces the Knitting Daily TV program, which airs on PBS.
Both of these often play off the resources of Interweave Knits, for instance offering galleries of sweaters featured in the magazine or publishing guest blog posts from the editor.
