Vintage Knit Hats by Kathryn Fulton.

Stackpole Books.

There are a lot of classic hat designs, from berets to stocking caps, slouchy hats to watch caps, and Kathryn Fulton covers a wide variety of toppers in her book Vintage Knit Hats: 21 Patterns for Timeless Fashions.

These fun patterns offer a nice overview of the wide range of styles that can be worn on the head while incorporating embellishments like stripes, cables, textured stitch patterns, slipped stitches and more.

The Patterns

It's pretty clear that effort was taken to include a lot of different styles of knit hats in this collection. It opens with a cute cloche and goes on to include tams and berets, a kid's helmet hat, a couple of hoods (hats with the scarf attached), stocking caps, watch caps, a newsboy and more.

Some of the patterns are pretty basic, but that's fine. There are also some with more intricate colorwork, such as a row of paper dolls or reindeer to increase interest and skill level.

I'm attracted to cloches so I like the Rose Cloche, worked in bulky yarn and using short row shaping to form the classic shape. The Berries and Cream Ski Cap uses a cute and easy slip stitch pattern to add interest without upping the skill level, and the Angora Beret looks like one you'd want to live in.

The slouchy City Stocking Cap is cute, and the First-Day-of-School Beret may be my favorite of the projects for little ones (except maybe the Snowball Fight Hat, if only because I have the exact yarn and colorway used in the book, which I think is funny).

The Slouchy Newsboy pictured on the cover is a nice one, too, with a textured stitch pattern and a simple brim for classic styling.

Bottom Line

Vintage Knit Hats is a nice little collection if you want a range of basic styles to choose from all in one place. Pair it with Fulton's Vintage Knit Gloves and Mittens for a full ensemble of accessories.
