Top of Women's Sampler Hat.

Cast on 40 stitches onto your circular knitting needle, but do not join in the round.
Knit 4 rows.
Join in round, then knit 10 rounds.
Purl 10 rounds.
Knit 1 round.
*Knit 3, knit 2 together. Repeat from * around. 32 stitches. Change to double-pointed needles, distributing stitches on 3 needles.
Knit 1 round.
*Knit 2, k2tog. Repeat from * around. 24 stitches.
Knit 1 round.
*Knit 1, k2tog. Repeat from * around. 16 stitches.
Knit 1 round.
*K2tog. Repeat from * around. 8 stitches.
Cut yarn, thread onto yarn needle, and slip stitches off the knitting needles onto the yarn. Pull tight and weave in end.
Use the tail from the cast on to sew up the seam for the Garter Stitch section.
