Free Knitting Patterns: Knitting Hat Patterns

Knitting hats are wonderful, quick projects that let you play with designs, color and stripes on a small project. They're very portable and easy to work up flat or in the round.
Striped Stocking Hat
This candy-striped stocking hat in red and white reminds me of a candy cane and would be a great variation on the traditional Santa hat.
Scarf Hat
The scarf hat (or hat scarf) is a combination hat and scarf where the scarf is attached to the hat like ear flaps. This is the ultimate cold-weather accessory because there is no way for the wind to get to your ears or neck since there's no space between the hat and scarf.
Slouchy Hat
This is a very easy hat pattern that makes a slouchy, fun hat for teens or adults. Three sizes are given, so you can knit it big or small.
Flat Hat
Knitting a hat flat is an easy way for beginners to learn to make hats, and it's also a quick way for established knitters to finish a project on the double. Knit with Ozark Handspun, this hat looks much fancier than it is.
Knitted Helmet Liner
Helmet liners are a wonderful charity knitting project for soldiers serving in colder climates. Here are the instructions for a knitted helmet liner being collected and sent to the troops.
Pink Ribbon Loom Knitted Hat
This loom knitted hat is a great way to learn the technique of loom knitting while showing your support for breast cancer awareness.
Alison's Beginner's Cap
If you've never made a hat before, this cute little cloche would be a wonderful first project. It's mostly straight knitting in the round with a little bit of ribbing on the edge, so it's quick to knit and fun to wear.
11th Hour Hat
If you're looking for a quick and easy hat that will knit up quickly but is still nice enough for a gift, look no further. Knit in merino wool, this cute hat has a garter stitch brim onto which the body of the hat is grafted.
London Beanie
This close-fitting, stretchy hat is perfect for any male you like to knit for. It's striped, so you can make them up in school colors or the colors of your favorite team (it's a fine hat for women, too).
Aran Toque
This fancy, fez-like hat features a great cable pattern running around the head. This would be a great hat for a fancy occasion or a lovely gift.
Lacy Cap
This nice open, lacy cap is quick to knit and fun to wear. It's the perfect "bad hair day" hat!
Maze Hat
This beautiful round hat has a short rolled brim and a slipped-stitch maze design on the main body of the hat. Great for men or women, this hat is incredibly stylish and fun to knit.
Minnesota Winter Hat
In Minnesota, they know how to deal with winter. This super warm hat, knit in the round, uses knit two, purl to ribbing for most of the body and a heavy worsted yarn to keep your head cozy, no matter what Nature throws at you.
Basic Rolled-Brim Hat
There's nothing cuter than a basic rolled-brim hat, and they're really quick and easy to knit, too. This simple pattern is quick to knit, even for beginners, and is sure to brighten your winter days.
