- Cast on 48 (52, 56, 60) stitches and work back and forth in Garter Stitch for 1.5 inches.
- Pay attention to how many rows this works out to be for you (as you will need to know this number) -- for me it was 11 rows.
- Switch to Stockinette Stitch and continue for 1.5 inches.
- Again, count your rows -- for me this was 9 rows.
- Continue in 1.5 inch stripes as established, keeping the number of rows within the stripes the same.
- AT THE SAME TIME, decrease 1 stitch at each side when piece measures 2 (2, 3, 3) inches, again when piece measures 4 (4, 5, 5) inches, again when piece measures 7 (7, 7, 8) inches, and again when piece measures 10 inches for largest size only. 42 (46, 50, 52) stitches.
- Continue in stripes without further shaping until piece measures 9 (9.5, 10.5, 12) inches, ending with a wrong side row.
- Shape armholes: bind off 3 (3, 4, 4) stitches at beginning of next 2 rows. 36 (40, 42, 44) stitches.
- Decrease 1 stitch at each side on next 3 (4, 4, 4) right side rows.
- Continue straight until piece measures 13.5 (14.5, 15.75, 17.5) inches, ending with a wrong side row.
- Shape Back Neck: K9 (9, 10, 10), BO 12 (14, 14, 16), K9 (9, 10, 10). Turn, and work these 9 (9, 10, 10) stitches first.
- Next row (WS): Work 1 row in pattern.
- Next row (RS): K1, SSK, work to end. 8 (8, 9, 9) stitches.
- Next row: Work 1 row.
- Leave stitches on a holder.
- Rejoin yarn to remaining stitches at wrong side row.
- Next row (WS): Work 1 row.
- Next row (RS): K to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1.
- Next row (WS): Work 1 row.
- Leave stitches on a holder.
