  1. Cast on 48 (52, 56, 60) stitches and work back and forth in Garter Stitch for 1.5 inches.
  2. Pay attention to how many rows this works out to be for you (as you will need to know this number) -- for me it was 11 rows.
  3. Switch to Stockinette Stitch and continue for 1.5 inches.
  4. Again, count your rows -- for me this was 9 rows.
  5. Continue in 1.5 inch stripes as established, keeping the number of rows within the stripes the same.
  6. AT THE SAME TIME, decrease 1 stitch at each side when piece measures 2 (2, 3, 3) inches, again when piece measures 4 (4, 5, 5) inches, again when piece measures 7 (7, 7, 8) inches, and again when piece measures 10 inches for largest size only. 42 (46, 50, 52) stitches.
  7. Continue in stripes without further shaping until piece measures 9 (9.5, 10.5, 12) inches, ending with a wrong side row.
  8. Shape armholes: bind off 3 (3, 4, 4) stitches at beginning of next 2 rows. 36 (40, 42, 44) stitches.
  9. Decrease 1 stitch at each side on next 3 (4, 4, 4) right side rows.
  10. Continue straight until piece measures 13.5 (14.5, 15.75, 17.5) inches, ending with a wrong side row.
  11. Shape Back Neck: K9 (9, 10, 10), BO 12 (14, 14, 16), K9 (9, 10, 10). Turn, and work these 9 (9, 10, 10) stitches first.
  12. Next row (WS): Work 1 row in pattern.
  13. Next row (RS): K1, SSK, work to end. 8 (8, 9, 9) stitches.
  14. Next row: Work 1 row.
  15. Leave stitches on a holder.
  16. Rejoin yarn to remaining stitches at wrong side row.
  17. Next row (WS): Work 1 row.
  18. Next row (RS): K to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1.
  19. Next row (WS): Work 1 row.
  20. Leave stitches on a holder.
