  1. Cast on 60 (72, 80, 92) stitches and join in the round, being careful not to twist.
  2. Work 1 inch in Stockinette Stitch (every row knit).
  3. Set up ribbed segments as follows: K3 (4, 5, 6), P2, K4 (5, 6, 8), P2, K7 (9, 10, 11), P2, K4 (5, 6, 8), P2, K7 (9, 10, 11), P2, K4 (5, 6, 8), P2, K7 (9, 10, 11), P2, K4 (5, 6, 8), P2, K4 (5, 5, 5).
  4. Continue in established pattern, knitting all the K stitches and purling the P stitches, until piece measures 4 (5, 5.5, 6.5) inches from beginning of rib.

Shaping the Crown:

  1. Next round: K1 (2, 3, 4), K2tog, P2, SSK, K0 (1, 2, 4), K2tog, P2, SSK, K3 (5, 6, 7), K2tog, P2, SSK, K0 (1, 2, 4), K2tog, P2, SSK, K3 (5, 6, 7), K2tog, P2, SSK, K0 (1, 2, 4), K2tog, P2, SSK, K3 (5, 6, 7), K2tog, P2, SSK, K0 (1, 2, 4), K2tog, P2, SSK, K2 (3, 3, 3). 44 (56, 64, 76) stitches.
  2. Next 2 rounds: K2 (3, 4, 5), P2, K2 (3, 4, 6), P2, K5 (7, 8, 9), P2, K2 (3, 4, 6), P2, K5 (7, 8, 9), P2, K2 (3, 4, 6), P2, K5 (7, 8, 9), P2, K2 (3, 4, 6), P2, K3 (4, 4, 4).
  3. K2 (3, 4, 5), P2tog, K2 (3, 4, 6), P2tog, K5 (7, 8, 9), P2tog, K2 (3, 4, 6), P2tog, K5 (7, 8, 9), P2tog, K2 (3, 4, 6), P2tog, K5 (7, 8, 9), P2tog, K2 (3, 4, 6), P2tog, K3 (4, 4, 4). 36 (48, 56, 68) stitches.
  4. P2tog around. 18 (24, 28, 34) stitches.
  5. Break yarn and continue in green.
  6. K2tog around. 9 (12, 14, 17) stitches.
  7. Knit.
  8. K1 (0, 0, 1), *K2tog. Repeat from * to end. 5 (6, 7, 9) stitches.
  9. Knit in rounds until stalk measures about 1 inch, then bind off.
  10. Weave in ends, and block if desired.
