- Cast on 54 (66, 72) stitches. Join in round on one or two circular needles. Place a stitch marker if desired to mark end of round.
- Work in Stockinette Stitch for 5 inches.
- *Knit 4, knit 2 together. Repeat from * around. 45 (55, 60) stitches.
- Work even for 1 inch.
- *Knit 3, k2tog. Repeat from * around. 36 (44, 48) stitches.
- Work even for 1 inch.
- *Knit 2, k2tog. Repeat from * around. 27 (33, 36) stitches.
- Work even for 1 inch.
- *Knit 1, k2tog. Repeat from * around. 18 (22, 24) stitches.
- Knit 3 rounds.
- K2tog around. 9 (11, 12) stitches.
- Knit 3 rounds. For size small, cut yarn, put onto yarn needle, slip stitches off knitting needles and pull tight.
- For medium and large sizes, k2tog around once more. There will be one extra stitch on the medium size; just knit it. 6 stitches remain.
- Cut yarn, place on yarn needle, slip stitches off and pull tight. Weave in end at top of hat.
Adding the Brim:
To add the brim, using a circular needle, pick up and knit 54 (66, 72) stitches from cast on edge, working from the right side to the wrong side. Place a stitch marker to mark the end of the round. Knit 1 round.
Knit in the front and back of each stitch around. 108 (132, 144) stitches.
Knit 3 rounds.
If a frilly edge is not desired, bind off loosely. If you want the frill, knit in the front and back of each stitch again. 216 (264, 288) stitches.
Bind off loosely. Weave in remaining ends.
