Tiny Witch Hat

This tiny Witch's Hat is the perfect addition to your Halloween decor. Use it to top a tiny pumpkin (or a little ball of orange yarn, as shown here) and have it decorate your dining room or entryway table or brighten up your cubicle or office.

Using just a tiny bit of black yarn, it's the perfect project for using a little scrap. Don't have extra medium weight black yarn lying around? Use a different weight, just change the needle size to correspond to the yarn in question. Because it doesn't have to fit a head, you can use the same instructions and simply get a hat of a different size.

  • about 7 yards medium weight black yarn
  • one set of four size 7 US (4.5 mm) double-pointed knitting needles
  • tape measure, scissors and yarn needle

About 4.5 stitches and 7 rows per inch in Stockinette Stitch in the round. Gauge is not critical, but fabric should be somewhat firm so the hat will stand on its own.

Finished hat is almost 7 inches around and about 4 inches tall.

  1. Cast on 30 stitches. Distribute onto 3 double-pointed knitting needles and join in round.
  2. Knit 1 inch.
  3. *Knit 4, knit 2 together. Repeat from * around. 25 stitches.
  4. Knit 1 inch.
  5. *Knit 3, k2tog. Repeat from * around. 20 stitches.
  6. Knit 1 inch.
  7. *Knit 2, k2tog. Repeat from * around. 15 stitches.
  8. Knit 2 rounds.
  9. *Knit 1, k2tog. Repeat from * around. 10 stitches.
  10. Knit 2 rounds.
  11. K2tog around. 5 stitches.
  12. Knit 1 round.
  13. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread yarn onto yarn needle and slip stitches from knitting needles onto the yarn needle. Pull tight, closing up the top of the hat. Weave in ends.

Knitting the Brim:

  1. Pick up and knit 30 stitches around the cast on edge of the work, inserting the needle from the right side to the wrong side as you form the stitches. Work in rounds.
  2. Knit 1 round.
  3. Knit in the front and back of each stitch all the way around. 60 stitches.
  4. Knit 4 rounds.
  5. Bind off loosely and weave in ends.

If desired, a length of wire can be woven into the bound off edge to straighten the brim of the hat.
