Tie on a Yellow Ribbon:

This cute yellow ribbon is a quick and easy accessory to knit up for Memorial Day, Veterans Day, the Fourth of July or any day you want to show your support for the armed forces.

Knit one or a bunch in an evening and let everyone know you're thinking of our fighting men and women.

  • 10 yards of worsted weight yarn in yellow
  • one pair size 8 US needles
  • scissors
  • crochet hook or yarn needle

Four stitches and five rows per inch in garter stitch. Gauge is not critical.

Finished size is 9 inches long and one inch wide. When folded into ribbon shape, it's 4.5 inches tall.

  1. Make a slip knot on one needle.
  2. Knit the stitch.
  3. Increase by knitting into the front and back of the stitch. Two stitches.
  4. Knit the next row.
  5. Knit in the front and back of the first stitch and knit across. Three stitches.
  6. Knit the next row.
  7. Knit in the front and back of the first stitch and knit across. Four stitches.
  8. Knit every row until piece measures about 8.5 inches.
  9. Decrease one on every other row by knitting two together until one stitch remains.
  10. Cut excess yarn and weave in ends.

Wearing the Project:

To wear the yellow ribbon, fold in half and cross the pointed ends over each other, making an open loop at the top.

These ribbons can be made bigger or smaller depending on your taste or who you are making the ribbon for (smaller ones can be made for children).

You could also make the ribbon in different colors to represent different causes, such as red for AIDS awareness and pink for breast cancer awareness.
