Knitting in the News: Hats, Boobs and a Happy Ending

Tuesday May 20, 2008
A knitting group in Missouri is supporting its local troops by knitting hats. More than 1,000 Missouri Air National Guard members are deployed in Kosovo, and the Independence-based Knit Whitz group is knitting hats for them. The group meets weekly at a local church to knit and has so far sent 25 hats overseas.

The National Post features a story about Beryl Tsang, the brains behind Tit-Bits knitted breast prostheses. Tsang says she first knit herself a black cashmere boob to wear to a party, and she liked it so much she started making them to sell and providing the pattern to others. She says she's sold about 3,600 of the breasts, and there are groups around the world that knit them to support women with breast cancer.

Finally, last week I told you about the poor "Dr. Who" fan who was getting pushed around by the BBC for publishing patterns based on some of the show's characters (which had subsequently ended up for sale by someone else on eBay). Well, now the BBC says it's sorry for causing such a fuss and it wants to talk to the knitter in question about partnering with her, perhaps to sell the patterns as part of a forthcoming like of "Dr. Who" toys. Mazzmatazz's website says she is "currently discussing matters with the BBC," but the patterns are not back on her site. Here's hoping for a good resolution for all. (I for one would totally pay for these patterns; they're darling!)
