Ready for a Hat Attack?

Many knitters are familiar with Sock Wars, the kill-or-be-killed sock knitting competition that was in its third year this year (and is technically still going, with more than 100 participants who have been knitting socks since May, though a winner was announced through a drawing), but you might not have heard of another yarn-related smackdown, Hat Attack.
This is the second year for the sudden death hat competition, which has a similar structure to Sock Wars. Registration for people who want to take part in this year's Hat Attack starts today, and the competition begins September 16. The last knitter standing will win $500 in yarn from Southwest Trading Company.

How many hats one have to knit?
It depends how long the contest goes. I’ve never participated in one of these, but from what I understand you get the pattern and a target, and your target has to receive her or his hat before you receive yours in order for you to stay alive. If that happens you get another name and so on until one person is left standing. In Sock Wars, some people are up to six pairs of socks so far; I imagine it would go higher with hats, since they’re faster to knit.
