Most of the time it doesn't matter all that much how many rows you've knit in Garter Stitch, but if you're wanting to make stripes that are all the same width or are following a pattern that calls for a certain number of rows rather than a certain number of inches, it's helpful to know how to count rows in Garter Stitch.
The trick is that it's actually easier to count ridges, or bumps in Garter, and each ridge represents two rows of knitting. The bumps of just half of a ridge (either the top or the bottom) will show you how many stitches you have. Easy, right?
