There are so many pretties in Iris Schreier's One + One Hats that you maybe tempted to knit them for a bunch of ladies in your life. (The name of the book, by the way, refers to the fact that the projects use two skeins of yarn.) And that will seem like a great idea until you realize that Schreier is the owner of luxury yarn line ArtYarns. And when I say luxury, I mean luxury.
These may be the most expensive hats in the history of yarn.
Of course you could use different yarn, but part of the lovely quality of these projects is because of the yarn -- particularly the ones that include glass beads, sequins, mohair, cashmere, etc. -- and it would be difficult to find a similar substitute (the book suggests Lion Brand yarns to use instead, but it just wouldn't be the same).
So save these projects for the truly special person. Maybe just for yourself. You will appreciate both the work that went into the project and the awesome yarn, and when you wear it you'll smile just a little bit wider because you know what a luxurious piece of art you have on your head.
That's what I'd do, anyway.
