As promised, Vickie Howell has provided us with another really fun stocking pattern -- I'm actually not sure which one I like best!
The Fa-La-La Fair Isle Stocking uses four colors of her Sheep(ish) yarn and three little stranded knitting charts to decorate the leg. They're pretty short pattern repeats, so you should be able to accomplish this project without much difficulty.
It also uses an afterthought heel, which is also not difficult, though you do need to take care when pulling out your waste yarn and putting the stitches back on the needles to work them. The heel and toe are worked exactly the same way, and both are finished off with a three-needle bind off. Oh, what fun!
