Choosing Colors for Knitting Projects

One of the most difficult decisions for knitters when they're first learning about color and trying to use more color in their knitting is how exactly to choose which colors to use.

I generally go with a pretty harmonious color palette, either using shades of the same color or related colors. There are also some yarn lines out there where all the colors are meant to go together (Vanna's Choice, for instance), so you can pick freely with the understanding that the colors should look pretty good together.

One fun way to learn more about color and how to make color choices in your knitting is to play a little game. Gather a bunch of yarn -- this is great for the little bits in your stash -- cast on some stitches and just knit. Go along in Garter Stitch as long as you like, changing yarns when you want. Either don't pay attention to color choices, or see what happens when you put two colors next to each other that you think aren't going to work. Do you like them after all?

This is a great way to learn about how colors interact with each other, and if you knit on long enough you can make a scarf to donate to charity or use yourself.
