A soap sack (or soap sachet) is not a necessary object, but it is a fun project. This is the ideal quick project to add to a spa gift set with a special bar of soap tucked inside. It can be one of those last-minute add-ons that you can knit up in a night and you might even want to make one for yourself.

This project is quick and easy to knit in an organic cotton yarn. The dropped stitches are decorative, and they also give the soap suds a handy way to escape during use. The sachet's cord is also functional and decorative, making sure your soap hangs in the shower in a pretty style.

Materials Needed

  • 25 yards worsted weight organic cotton yarn such as Lion Brand Organic Cotton 
  • Size 6 US needles
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Pattern Gauge and Size

Gauge: About 4 stitches and 5 rows per inch in pattern. Gauge is not critical, and the project will stretch slightly if needed.

Size: The finished size is 6 inches around and 5 inches tall after sewing. The knitted piece before sewing is three inches wide and 10 inches long.

Drop Stitch Soap Sack Pattern

This is a very simple and quick project that knits up quickly. Be sure to read through the entire pattern before beginning. If you can knit, purl, and yarn over, you can do this. The majority is worked in stockinette stitch, which is simply knit 1 row, purl 1 row.

Pay special attention to steps 6 and 7 as this is where those long dropped stitches are formed. In 6, you will wrap (or yarn over) twice and in the following row, you will simply drop that last yarn over. The double wrapping is designed not to create an extra stitch (as is usual) but to give that one stitch more length to create the bars in the sachet.

  1. Cast on 15 stitches.
  2. Knit 4 rows in stockinette stitch.
  3. On the next row, knit two together, yarn over across, ending with a yarn over and knitting the last stitch.
  4. Purl across the next row.
  5. Continue in stockinette stitch for 4 more rows.
  6. On the next row, knit each stitch, wrapping the yarn twice around the needle when forming each stitch.
  7. Purl, the next row, dropping the extra loop.
  8. Continue in this manner, knitting 4 rows in stockinette and wrapping and dropping, until the piece measures 9 inches from beginning.
  9. Repeat step 3.
  10. Knit 4 more row in stockinette.
  11. Bind off. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail.

Finishing the Sachet

Sew up the sides of the project using mattress stitch one stitch in from the edge.

Weave a cord through the eyelets. This can be a piece of ribbon or yarn, a braided piece of yarn, or an I-cord. Insert your soap and tie the soap sack closed.
