Lots and lots of readers have asked me about the Special Olympics scarf project, whether it would be happening again and what the colors would be this year.

For those who don't know about this project, it started in 2009 with the goal of providing handmade scarves for the participants in the Special Olympics World Winter Games held that year in Boise, Id. While only 5,000 scarves were needed, a whopping 60,000 were produced. This year, 2,100 scarves were made in just five weeks when the tradition was continued at the last minute.

For 2011, Red Heart and the Special Olympics have set up a website that helps knitters and crocheters contribute to the Special Olympics program of their choice (there are 33 across the country).

The colors this year are two different shades of blue, one called Blue and the other Turqua. The different states have different deadlines and quantities of scarves they need based on when their events are held. Texas, for example, needs its scarves before the end of January, while Minnesota is looking for scarves by mid-February.

Check the project guidelines page at the website to find the particulars for the state you'd like to help and for general information about the size of the scarves and where and how to ship them. You can also visit the project on Facebook to share photos, see what other crafters are doing and learn more about the project.
