I think one reason some people shy away from knitting bags and purses is that knitting inherently has spaces where things can poke through or fall out if you're trying to carry something in a knit object.
But there's one really easy way around that: sew up a fabric lining for your knit purse. It's not too difficult to do (even if, like me, you don't have super-great sewing skills), and it adds to the fun and creativity of a project because you get to choose the type of fabric you want on the inside of your bag.
You can go matchy-matchy if that's your style or throw a totally bizarre and unexpected bit of fabric in your bag that will make you smile every time you use it. That's the whole point of making things for yourself, isn't it?
