What's On My Needles: Swatchy Goodness

Just off the needles yesterday is this swatch of simple Stockinette with eyelets every fourth row, worked in pretty Patons Angora Bamboo. I'm trying to decide if I have enough for a little top (or even a dress) or if I just want to make a knit bodice and then sew on a fabric skirt. Some math will be involved, and I'm putting that off for now, but I do like the look of the swatch.

If you see the strings peeking out from the back of the swatch and are wondering what I was up to, that's the cheater's way to make a circular gauge swatch without really knitting in the round. I know from experience that I don't have the same gauge in flat and circular knitting (most people don't because they have different gauge on their knit rows than they do on their purl rows) so working a swatch like this gives me a much better idea of what my gauge will really be when I work the project in the round.

So, what's on your needles?

On my needles right now is the first sleeve of a cardigan, bulky weight, picked up and knit from the body on two circulars. Also have socks started on two circulars, and a crochet top project about 1/2 done.

what’s not on my needles?? I have a scarf in team colors (Celtic FC), the first of a pair of socks, and two blankets that are on semi permanent hold at the moment. I’m dreading swatching for a KAL sweater, but I’ll get to it after the scarf is finished this weekend

A baby blanket, almost done. I have about 3-4 inches left on it. I wouldn’t let myself start anything else till I finish it, cause I knew I would put it down, then not get it done in time for the new baby(due Aug 19). But I really am ready to work on something else!

I am making a large afghan with one big skein’s-worth in bright rose on one end in KPKP KKK, then a big skein of white in seed stitch, then a big skein of blossom pink in all-knit (I forget the name of the stitch), and will do another white skein in seed stitch, and end with KPKP KKK in the bright rose again. This is a gift for one of the witnesses at our (civil) wedding last year. She likes light, bright colors and lives in a cold place. It is a pleasure to make something for her. I already made an afghan for the male friend who was our other witness. His colors are brown, tan, burgundy, in a plain stitch. Next will be a pillow top in royal bue and yellow for a granddaughter to take to college.

I am knitting my first baby sweater for a niece’s friend. I’m not sure I am loving the sage color, but will finish it, learn from it and re-knit it in duckie yellow. On my other needles — I just finished the 1st of a pair of booties to go with the sweater. My favorite thing to knit is socks for women. I’ve never attempted a pair of socks for DH – Dear Husband – yet but this winter may be the year I do that!
