Are You a Knitting Addict?

By , About.com Guide   July 27, 2010

Follow me on:

Most knitters start out innocently enough. They may begin knitting simple scarves, with easy stitch patterns. They may even stick with scarves knit with basic wool for a long time.

But eventually someone will slip them some alpaca or cashmere, or teach them how to knit socks, and it's all over. Knitting goes from being just something fun to do with your hands to a downright obsession.

This week I'd like to know where you fall on the knitting spectrum. Are you someone who doesn't think you'll fall down the slippery slope of fiber obsession, or are you so far gone you don't even remember what it was like to not carry your knitting with you all the time?

New knitters might be unsure where the line is between enjoying knitting and being a downright knitaholic. So those of you who know what's it like to be completely obsessed can help them out by finishing the sentence "You know you're a knitaholic when..." I'm excited to see all of your answers!

I carry my knitting with me in a saddlebag on my Harley-Davidson Road King when I ride to Sturgis, SD, each August.

I am not yet a knitaholic, however, I am a craft-aholic. I knit, I crochet, I sew, I bead, in short, my hands are very seldom still.

WHILE I ALWAYS HAVE SOMETHING IN THE WORKS, I DO NOT ALWAYS CARRY MY KNITTING WITH ME, BUT I AM “NERVOUS” IF I DO NOT HAVE IT WITH ME. I GUESS THAT IS A SURE SIGN OF A KNITAHOLIC.

You know you’re a knitting addict when:

You hide your latest yarn purchase until such a time when you can slip it into your stash.

All you want for Christmas is a gift card to the yarn shop.

You find a bag of yarn and don’t remember when you bought it or what you wanted to make from it.

You discover that you have several printed copies of the same free online pattern.

You make little moaning sounds while fingering a skein of delectable yarn.

Your college-age daughter needs money. There is a sale at the yarn shop. The decision is easy if you are a true addict, but your daughter may quit speaking to you.

I’m definitely a knitting addict. I’ve taken pictures of people’s sweaters so I could try to duplicate the stitch pattern.
All my friends fully expect me to be knitting when visiting them.
