Destashing while Helping Others: Yarnstorming
Friday July 3, 2009
It seems pretty inevitable that, when we knitters get the courage to clear out or organize our stashes, that we'll find some things in there that seem, shall we say, questionable. We might not remember buying them or what the purpose we had in mind for them was. They might be a color we don't actually like. That doesn't make it bad yarn, just yarn that hasn't found its right home yet.
If you have some yarn like that, you might want to check out this great idea from the good folks at Martha's Vineyard Fiber Farm and Hudson Valley Fiber Farm: Yarnstorming. The idea is that they'll collect both unwanted yarn and the names of people who could use it (such as people going through hard times because of the economy or other bad situations) and connect that yarn with a good home.
The idea has already sprouted a Ravelry group with more than 200 members. You can go there or to the blog linked above for more information on how to donate, let the right people know of someone in need, or send a donation for shipping.
This is such a lovely, simple idea the very thought of it has been making me happy all week. It just might get me a little more serious about destashing a bit of my own yarn collection.
