Knitting and Purling with Gigi
Saturday June 27, 2009
If you're trying to get a child more interested in learning to knit, Karen Thalacker's books Knitting with Gigi and Gigi Knits and Purls might be just the thing.
These cute little books (just 32 pages each) include brief stories in verse about Gigi learning to knit (the first book is also about knitting for others, which is a nice touch). They include basic knitting instruction in casting on, knitting, decreasing, binding off and finishing projects, while the second book teaches purling and the yarn over increase as well as mattress stitch.
Each book has eight projects to allow new knitters to use their skills and get comfortable with knitting and purling without having to focus on much else.
These books would be a great gift, along with a ball of yarn and some needles, for a long weekend or holiday when you're going to be around the little knitter to be in order to help him or her learn to knit along with the books.

Nice but what about the boys? Another idea – for the – Leisure Aarts sells a DVD for children who want to learn to knit. It has a few segments & the thing I love about it (since my 2 oldest grands are boys) is that one segment is a 7 year old boy demonstrating how to cast on, & do the knit & purl stitches. I’ll be on the lookout for those 2 books (my youngest grand is a girl – not quite old enough for knitting lessons at 2 but – maybe someday. . .) Here’s a link to the DVD: http://tinyurl.com/lg6kwn I wonder why it hasn’t gotten more notie. I had never heard of it & saw it at JoAnn’s- I decided to buy it because it was only $15 & it looked like it could be good & it isH.
