An Easy First Project

Whether you're teaching knitting to a child or an adult, it's a good idea to have a relatively quick, easy and useful project for them to try once they've knit a swatch or two. This Skinny Scarf is perfect because it's all Garter Stitch and its worked on just 10 stitches in medium weight yarn so the knitting goes pretty quickly even for a new knitter.

By the end of this project any knitter should feel very comfortable with the knit stitch, and adding tassels to the ends makes the project a bit more fun (and draws the eye away from any mistakes that might be lurking in the project). The finished scarf can be used as a scarf, a belt or a hair tie, or as a scarf for a favorite stuffed animal.

And of course it can be knit in any color or yarn the knitter wants, but the project pictured is nice because the bright yarn against plain bamboo needles makes the stitches very easy to see (it could be a touch dark when worked on darker needles, though) and the wool yarn is incredibly forgiving and easy to work with.
