Knitting in the News: Knit Graffiti, a Knitting Comic and More
Thursday January 22, 2009
This week's theme for knitting in the news seems to be that knitting is everywhere and can be combined with anything to make something unexpected and fun. There's a story from the UK about a group of knit graffiti artists (check out the awesome busy cozy they made) and a new online comic devoted to knitting.
There's also talk of a one-woman show, "Wong Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," which in part uses knitting and humor to confront a serious subject: mental illness among Asian American women.
And finally an uplifting story for people who want to see equality for all, about a guy who's finally knitting in earnest after his grandmother taught him to knit many years ago. It's a story about being gay, doing what you think the world wants of you, and finally realizing that you have to be your own person, do the dirty work and, yes, knit if you want to, regardless of what other people think. Here's to all of that!

Good to see more men knitting.
Thanks for the online knitting cartoon. Both weeks that are out there so far are fabulous!!!
When I lived abroad in Argentina, I was pleasantly surprised to find that many men – hetero or gay – knew how to knit. I was the odd one out since I didn’t learn how to knit ’til many years later. I’ve asked my husband – who has an incredible eye and hand for design – to learn to knit so we can knit together. He was up for it til someone said it might look gay…sheesh. Well, at least he’s always great about untangling and holding my yearn while I knit and watch movies.
