Do You Use Different Stitch Patterns?
Tuesday January 13, 2009
But I wonder how many of you are using stitch patterns beyond the basics of Garter, Stockinette and ribbing when you knit. Do you still use the basics most of the time or do you try to incorporate different stitch patterns into everything you do? Let us know by answering this poll; leave a comment if you've got any tips for new knitters on trying stitch patterns (mine: make washcloths).

I love to try different stitches. I am using a Twin Rib on a headband and it is coming out really nice. I will use that pattern again on a bigger project.
I’ve used seed stitch, mistake rib, various cable stitches, and various lace stitches. I haven’t yet gone beyong the pattern, though, using something fancier than what the pattern called for. I guess that’ll be the next step. I just found a pattern for a cable that looks like the double helix of DNA, so maybe I’ll incorporate that into mittens or something.
I am relatively new to knitting. (Crocheted for years.) I am still working on my stockinette being even every time I pick up the needles. I am looking forward to branching out to more complex stitches like cables and argyle patterns with all the color changes….one day.
Carol, my daughter is an immunologist, and i would love to make her something with a double helix pattern. Can you let me know where you found the pattern? Thanks.
I used to use a lot of different pattern stitches, the more complicated the better. I made a car coat length cable jacket for my daughter with at least 12 different cables in it. Now that I’m much older I’m content with the more simple basic patterns, some cables, some open work, nothing fancy or lacy. But I still have to have something to knit.
My favorite sweater is one I knit cuff to cuff with the Walker Stitch Treasuries at my side. Every couple of inches I changed stitch patterns and even knit one band of cables and attached them domino style from top to bottom rather than side to side.
The DNA scarf pattern, for the lady looking for the double helix, is in a fall issue of IWK about 4 years ago.
I enjoy working with new and different stitches. Knitting helps keep my mind sharp.
I do a variety of knitting but like variety in the patterns of which I have heaps, but I’m not clever enopugh to work without a pattern. I got growled at this year for not submitting work for our local agricultural show so I am getting an early start, even though the weather is VERY hot. this means more intricate work.
