Sizing Matters
Wednesday January 7, 2009
I guess it's just the time of year for questions about hats, but it seems like I've been getting more e-mails lately on how to resize hat patterns than just about anything else lately.
So I decided to write up this quick tutorial to help people who aren't sure how to, say, take a hat pattern that's written for an adult and make it fit a 4-year-old, or take a pattern for a baby and size up to a toddler's head.
For basic patterns the math is really not that difficult (trust me, if I can say that, it's not too bad) and with more complex patterns you just have to pay a bit more attention to the stitch pattern or color pattern that's happening in the design to make sure it will still come out looking good in a different size. But most of the time with just a little effort you can take a pattern and make it just the size you need.
