A Knitting Tutorial
Sunday January 4, 2009
Some people like to have a book in front of them when they are learning a new skill. Though I initially learned to knit from my grandmother and mother, when I picked the craft up again after college I mostly learned from a book, so I'm familiar with the desire. The best kinds of books for new knitters take them through the different skills that are needed to become a proficient knitter one by one, with projects that build on each other as the knitter builds confidence in her or his skills.
Such as book is Knit.101, from the editors at Knit.1 magazine. It starts out with the basics and a couple of Garter Stitch projects, then moves on to Stockinette, knitting stripes, working in the round, adding colorwork and putting together sweaters.
While I'm not thrilled with the way the book was organized (some of the projects require instructions you haven't yet received if you're reading the book cover to cover) it does provide a pretty sound basic education in the ins and outs of knitting (also crochet, but that's another site).
